Sean Bean

The below is my own reviews and opinions of several Sean Bean movies. If your opinion differ, that’s fine by me but don’t send me flames about it, okay?

All movie titles in bold are 'must have, buy now, can't miss!' movies. All movie titles written like this are 'Okay, buy it to see Sean Bean though the wrong guy plays the big lead etc' and every other titles are either movies to buy ONLY to support Sean Bean or I haven't seen/reviewed the film yet.

National Treasure (2004) .... Ian
Genre: Adventure/drama
Story: Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) has spent most of his life searching for a hidden treasure no one else seem to believe exists. Clue to its existence is found in a lot of US historical landmarks. Benjamin’s partner Ian (Sean Bean) decides he would rather spent some of the treasure, should they find it, instead of giving it all to museums and they part on bad terms. Both men know the Declaration Of Independence has a hidden map on the back and they decide to steal it, starting a race for the treasure.
Sean Bean: SB tries hard to give is character a depth Ian is never allowed to get. I think he was meant to be Benjamin's evil double but this doesn't work. They keep saying he's evil but very clever...he doesn't very often come across as either.
SB’s character: Ian's character was misused. He was clever when this fitted the plot and VERY stupid the moment after.
Reason to see it: It's a big movie in all ways and Sean looks great with longish blond hair.
Good things: Did I mention Sean Bean? I found the plot daft and the movie WAY too long but the 2+ hours was still pleasent whenever I could focus on the goodness that is Sean *laughs*
Bad things: Unbelieverble plot, bad plot...in short...bad storyline! Misuse of Ian...and Cage didn't do a thing for me. I think SB WAY more attractive so trying to force myself to like Cage's character was hard.
Sean Bean’s character dies: No but he is sent to jail (oh, come on! You knew they wouldn't let him escape...however if they had and had let Ian remain clever and likeable in a dark way I would have forgiven them the BAD plot!). It's a Disney movie after all!

Troy (2002) .... Odysseus
Genre: Historical drama
Story: Paris kidnaps Helen with him home to Troy, starting the war between Troy and Greece
Sean Bean: His role is very small but as always he plays it well.
SB’s character: Odysseus is a kind, patient and good King. He's a deep character who should have had more screen time.
Reason to see it: It's a big movie in all ways and Eric Bana (Hector) is amazing!
Good things: Seeing a lost world, Eric Bana and his character of Hector and Sean Bean with Odysseus.
Bad things: Homer's Achilles and Patroclus were NOT cousins but lovers and I find it disturbing that the world today is so much more intolerent that this fact is not only not mentioned but they have to be blood related to explain the two men's closeness. Closed-minded and idiotic directors! Go watch Alexander; NOW there is a movie which dares show the Greeks the way they were! Also...this movie has done away with ALL the Greek Gods and Goddesses that Homer has in the book! And then finally with the risk of having all fangirls kill me then I must say Paris and Orlando Bloom's acting. First of all the character wasn't likeable. A lover before a fighter he still tried to play the fighter part and this is were things went wrong and Hector has to bail him out. Also Paris doesn't consider anyone else but his own pleasure with Helen until it's way too late to do anything about it. Orlando Bloom has the looks for this role but I couldn't feel any love between Helen and Paris and the first bedroom scene between Paris and Helen I'm not sure what emotions OB tries to protray but to me it just seemed like strange facial expressions. But as said he did have a really bad role to work with so here's hoping the kid has better luck next time.
Sean Bean’s character dies: No but almost everyone else does. But then having read Homer's books everyone knew this. But then SB's characters tend to survive in war movies (Bravo Two Zero, Sharpe...)

Equilibrium (2001) .... Partridge
Genre: A Si-Fi movie
Story: Set in a time where free thinking and any human emotions are outlawed and the few and brave fight the system for a change.
Sean Bean: His role is very small but as always he plays it well. He says so much with his body language and eyes even though he hardly speaks.
SB’s character: A freedom fighting fighting for his right and his belives. A true tragic hero, easy to love and feel for. Though he is killed early on his death starts the events the movie is all about. In short without this character there would be no movie.
Reason to see it: Where to start? It gives you something to think about; morals, right and wrongs, honour, the obvious comparison to Nazi Germany and any other government form based on brain washing and so on. The fight scenes Bale, who plays the main character, makes are amazing and truly stunning. The story is surprising though the overall ending isn't.
Good things: All S.B.'s scenes because they're just heartbreaking, especially his death scene. Bale's awakening is amazing to follow. The final showdown is violent but beautiful at the same time. Partridge's girlfriend's deadscene was very sad and the scene where Bale's character's son has the means to betray him is amazing.
Bad things: That S.B isn't in it much, only about 25 minutes and therefore we don't get the in deep knowlegde about Partridge that I would have liked to.
Sean Bean’s character dies: Yes. He is executed by Bale's character, marking the turning point in his character's selfawareness.

Tom & Thomas (2001) .... Paul
Genre: A children’s movie
Story: Not available yet
Sean Bean: Not available yet
SB’s character: Not available yet
Reason to see it: Not available yet
Good things: Not available yet
Bad things: Not available yet
Sean Bean’s character dies: Not available yet.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, (2001) .... Boromir
Genre: Fantasy
Story: Like you don’t know already….The one Ring has to be destroyed inside a big mountain [Mt. Doom].
Sean Bean: Brilliant acting. He’s the perfect choice to this role. He gives Boromir depth and really brings this complex and haunted character to life.
SB’s character: One of the good guys! Boromir, one of the Nine Walkers. Boromir is a very fascinating man. He’s complex, haunted, proud and obviously carries a great burden.
Reason to see it: You need more reason than seeing Sean Bean playing a good guy in a major movie?! It has great sets, a good story, fantastic cast….it’s a wonderful fantasy.
Good things: Boromir saving Frodo, Boromir carrying Frodo, Boromir’s talk with Aragorn, Boromir’s death scene.
Bad things: Boromir first enters the movie after one whole hour of watching irritatingly cute Hobbits. And either Aragorn or Legolas sings a funeral song for Boromir. Also I would have wished for more obvious grief from Aragorn or Legolas after Boromir’s death.
Sean Bean’s character dies: Yes.

Don't Say a Word (2001) .... Patrick Barry Koster
Genre: Thriller
Story: Patrick wants a code that a mentally sick girl has in her mind. To get it he kidnaps Michael Douglas’ character’s daughter.
Sean Bean: He plays great as always but he’s way too good for this role. You can’t hate him or see him as a villain.
SB’s character: Officially the bad guy but Patrick was to me a good guy. Sure he has got his morals wrong but I liked Patrick. We only saw him do one bad thing (besides a robbery) and that was accidentally killing the mentally sick girl’s father and he was a criminal himself who has stolen a jewel from Patrick. Patrick even says that he doesn’t want to kill Douglas’ daughter if Douglas doesn’t keep the deadline but has to because so are the rules. So he obviously doesn’t enjoy killing.
Reason to see it: To see and hear Sean Bean and to support him. This is the ONLY reason to see this. The story is predictable and the only characters I could feel anything for was Patrick and the mentally sick girl.
Good things: Patrick’s accent, his funny remarks when he knows everything Douglas thinks of doing before he does it.
Bad things: The ending! The ending totally ruined this movie for me. Douglas and Patrick are at a centenary. Patrick says he would have killed the man who kidnapped his daughter and says Douglas isn’t like him. Then the two men fight and Douglas who’s a physiologist and have never fired a weapon in his life or fought gets Patrick who the whole movie has been superior in everything on his knees and asks him name which he tells him. Then Douglas asks if Patrick is sure he isn’t like him. Then Douglas promptly buries Patrick alive! Now this really ruined it for me. In my eyes what Douglas’ character did was murder. And to top it off the movie ends with Douglas going to his wife and daughter and gives them a hug and all is happy happy. UGH! Terrible! The man has just murdered Patrick and then he goes and plays nice with his family?! That was too much for me.
Oh, and then the actress who played Jean in the X-men movie was Douglas’s wife in the movie that didn’t help as I dislike movie Jean and Douglas’s wife was dressed exactly like Jean. On a side note she also played the bad girl in “Goldeneye”.
Sean Bean’s character dies: Yes.

Essex Boys (2000) .... Jason Locke
Genre: Action
Story: Jason comes out from prison and wants to rebuild his criminal empire.
Sean Bean: Great acting, he fits perfectly as the leader in the gang.
SB’s character: Jason is a mean bastard but you care for him all the same because he struggles for his survival…. and loses.
Reason to see it: To support Sean Bean or if the murders in UK which this movie is based on interests you.
Good things: Sean Bean as a leader. That’s pretty much it.
Bad things: The overdone ‘sex’ scene in the garden and the murder of Jason and his gang. It seemed strange that he could so easily be fooled. Also that bitch of his former girlfriend was way too manipulative to have been a real character and I felt nothing for her.
Sean Bean’s character dies: Yes.

Extremely Dangerous (1999) (TV) .... Neil Byrne
Genre: Thriller
Story: Neil is accused for the murder on his wife and daughter and must fight to clear his name.
Sean Bean: A great choice for this role. Wonderful acting, everything fits just right.
SB’s character: Neil is very talented at what he does and you really feel with him and for him.
Reason to see it: Everything. This is just a great movie.
Good things: Neil getting even for the murder of his wife and daughter.
Bad things: None I can think of.
Sean Bean’s character dies: No. The small screen is better if one wants to live *G*

Bravo Two Zero (1999) .... Andy McNab
Genre: Authentic war drama
Story: McNab is captured by the enemy with his group in the Golf War.
Sean Bean: Great choice. Again a leader role. He plays even the hardest scenes (the torture scenes) brilliantly.
SB’s character: A great leader, easy to love and admire.
Reason to see it: Everything. A must see.
Good things: The torture scenes are painfully well done, the reunion of the soldiers is also very memorable.
Bad things: None
Sean Bean’s character dies: No. YEAH!

Ronin (1998) .... Spence
Genre: Action/Thriller
Story: Several criminals are hired to get a case back.
Sean Bean: He plays great but the character seem out of place; not that it's SB's fault.
SB’s character: We never get to know him. It's hinted Spence is Ex-soldier but...He seem very insecure and out of place
Reason to see it: None really. Waste of my time. Only reason would be to see SB
Good things: None
Bad things: For starters SB is in the movie for a max. of 40 minutes. His character seems out of place. Spence is way too bad at his job to be hired by pros. To the end I fought it'll be great if he had been playing stupid and was really MI6 or something but no such luck. Boring movie with a plot which is never really solved
Sean Bean’s character dies: No.

Sharpe movies (12 + Sharpe’s Legend) (1993-1997) (TV) .... Richard Sharpe
Genre: Historical drama
Story: You should know this by now. Sharpe rises from the ranks to be a hero in the Napoleon War.
Sean Bean: Again a great choice. Sean Bean IS Sharpe! No doubt there.
SB’s character: Come on, what’s not to love? Brave, sarcastic, loyal, ambitious…..
Reason to see it: Everything. A great story, great settings, great actors….
Good things: Everything. Come on, I’m a Sharpe fan, what did you expect?
Bad things: None
Sean Bean’s character dies: No. Another good reason to see these movies

Anna Karenina (1997) .... Vronsky ... aka Anna Karénine (1997) (France)
Genre: Historical drama
Story: Set in the 1880's Russia. Vronsky loves Anna who's a married woman. Anna is unhappy and they fall in love. Vronsky convinces Anna to run away with him but soon Vronsky finds that eternal love works much better in fantasy than reality
Sean Bean: He was a great choice and brought real feeling to his character
SB’s character: Vronsky is a good man; he loves Anna a lot and is willing to give up everything to be with her
Reason to see it: It's a tragic love story
Good things: The love between Vronsky and Anna before things go badly
Bad things: Can be long, a bit confusing and annoying. Also be warned that the love story in this film (and the book it's based upon) is a very thin cover for showing the reader/viewer than the old Tsar rule was unjust and that Communism was the solution to Russia's problems (obviously Leo Tolstoy (who wrote the book) didn't live long under the new rule to believe that)
Sean Bean’s character dies: For once; no but Vronsky wish he was dead after Anna kills herself. The film ends as Vronsky goes off to battle; most likely to die

When Saturday Comes (1996) .... Jimmy Muir
Genre: Drama
Story: A man with a troubled past gets a chance to play with The Blades.
Sean Bean: Great choice. You can see Sean’s own love for the team shine through.
SB’s character: Troubled, interesting and easy to feel for/with.
Reason to see it: A wonderful feel-good story.
Good things: It’s just a nice movie, plain and simple.
Bad things: None.
Sean Bean’s character dies: NO! This alone is worth buying this movie for *G*

GoldenEye (1995) .... Alec Trevalyan
Genre: Drama
Story: Bond is at it again.
Sean Bean: He’s great as an MI6 agent and he really brings his character depth.
SB’s character: I really feel with him. Ii can understand his reasons and I don’t really think he’s all that bad.
Reason to see it: Sean Bean is in it. Hmm, can’t really think if any other reason as I’m not the greatest Bond fan and besides I liked Roger Moore as Bond the best.
Good things: Sean Bean and 007 working together at the beginning and the conversation where SB tells about his past and the terrible things that happened.
Bad things: Predictable story as always, lots of beautiful half-naked women throwing themselves at Bond’s feet…also as always….
Sean Bean’s character dies: As always on the big screen; yes.

Black Beauty (1994) .... Farmer Grey
Genre: Children’s movie.
Story: Talking horse on an adventure.
Sean Bean: Is a great choice for the nice farmer.
SB’s character: He’s a good guy but only in the movie for a very short while.
Reason to see it: To see SB or if you love this well-known story.
Good things: The moments between the horse and Grey.
Bad things: None really save SB has so little screen time.
Sean Bean’s character dies: No. WOW. Aren't you happy? *G*

Jacob: A TNT Bible Story (1994) (TV) .... Esau ... aka Jacob (1994) (TV)
Genre: Biblical drama.
Story: Can't recall
Sean Bean: Handsome as always but it's strange to see him in a movie of this kind
SB’s character: Headstrong, self assure, great hunter but lacks respect for God
Reason to see it: To avoid reading the story for your Bible class?
Good things: SB siting in the grass while hunting a deer and we get a clear look at his wonderful green eyes; yes
Bad things: Long, long to take flight, boring
Sean Bean’s character dies: I don't think so....not sure though

"Scarlett" (1994) (mini) TV Series .... Lord Richard Fenton
Genre: Historical drama
Story: Continues “Gone With The Wind”
Sean Bean: He plays wonderfully but not even his talent can lift this movie up.
SB’s character: He’s playing for Scarlett’s heart but he’s a real bastard. It's probably one of the meanest guys Sean has ever played.
Reason to see it: To see SB.
Good things: Nothing at all! This movie isn't woth remembering.
Bad things: Boring and very long. Just a terrible movie all in all! “Gone With The Wind” has never said me anything so this one was even worse.
Sean Bean’s character dies: Yes. He was stabbed to death which he sure had coming!

Woman's Guide to Adultery, A (1993) (TV) .... Paul
Genre: Not available yet
Story: Not available yet
Sean Bean: Not available yet
SB’s character: Not available yet
Reason to see it: Not available yet
Good things: Not available yet
Bad things: Not available yet

Lady Chatterley (1992) (TV) .... Mellors
Genre: Historical drama
Story: Not available yet
Sean Bean: Not available yet
SB’s character: Not available yet
Reason to see it: Not available yet
Good things: Not available yet
Bad things: Not available yet
Sean Bean’s character dies: Not available yet.

Patriot Games (1992) .... Sean Miller
Genre: Action
Story: Miller’s brother is shot and killed by Ryan. Miller wants revenge.
Sean Bean: Great choice, he plays wonderfully and looks VERY hot.
SB’s character: I like him (might be because he was about to kill HF's character and I just hated his performance) and understand him (up until he wants to kill Ryan's kid and wife...that part should have been left out IMHO.). Sean has lead a hard life and it annoys me that the movie went with a b/w view of things instead of letting Sean stay the complex character that he is. Even before I knew anything about SB or Sharpe Miller spoke to me and I could understand his rage and frustration (again, only up until the movie IMHO went overboard with Sean having to be a 'real' bad guy and try and kill the kid and the wife). On the other hand I felt nothing for Ryan which was unlike the feeling I got from “The Hunt For Red October” where I loved Ryan.
Reason to see it: To see Sean Bean give a brilliant performance.
Good things: Hmm, SB is in it of course!
Bad things: Harrison Ford is in it and unfortunately plays the ‘hero’. Alec Baldwin played Ryan so much better...Sean would have been a great choice too if Ryan had been British.
It was also during filming of this movie that Harrison Ford gave Sean Bean the scar he still carries above his left eye.
Sean Bean’s character dies: Yes. He's killed by Ryan

Clarissa (1991/I) (TV) .... Lovelace
Genre: Historical drama
Story: Not available yet
Sean Bean: Not available yet
SB’s character: Lovelace is the bad guy
Reason to see it: Not available yet
Good things: Not available yet
Bad things: Not available yet
Sean Bean’s character dies: Not available yet.

Field, The (1990) .... Tadgh McCabe
Genre: Historical drama
Story: A woman wants to sell her land on an auction and Tadgh’s dad wants it
Sean Bean: Wonderful acting, too bad this film is so realistic they have discoloured his teeth
SB’s character: Tadgh is a good young man but he’s very afraid of his dad who has a terrible temper and rules the family with an iron fist
Reason to see it: It’s what I’ll call a typical Oscar nominated movie; historical correct, great acting and with an unhappy end
Good things: Tadgh talking with his girlfriend about their fathers beating them, Tadgh’s death scene
Bad things: It’s slow moving and very true to its time
Sean Bean’s character dies: Yes.

Fifteen Streets, The (1989) (TV) .... Dominic O'Brien
Genre: Historical drama
Story: Poor man falls for rich lady.
Sean Bean: He's play is great but I wouldn't have choosen him for this role.
SB’s character: A character very hard to love. He's careless and self-centered. In short; he's a bastard.
Reason to see it: The story is alright but...*shrug*
Good things: Hmm....it's a pretty nice story still.
Bad things: Slow and a bit boring.
Sean Bean’s character dies: No, but he gets beat up and sent away in disgrace. His character had it coming for indirectly killing his sister.

Stormy Monday (1988) .... Brendan
Genre: Drama
Story: Night club owner has troubles...
Sean Bean: Wonderfully cast as Brendan. He steals the entire image!
SB’s character: Brendan was one of the first Sean Bean characters I fell in love with. He's shy, kind and so sweet
Reason to see it: Every scene with Brendan are great. And then Sting (the singer) is in it too!
Good things: Everything. Brendan defending his girl, Kate, Kate tending to his wounds and Brendan in Sting's home are wonderful scenes.
Bad things: I felt it was a bit too short
Sean Bean’s character dies: No. WOW. I'm impressed *LOL*

Troubles (1988) (TV) .... Capt. Bolton
Genre: Historical drama
Story: Set after WW1; the story of soldiers
Sean Bean: He plays great as always
SB’s character: He's alright but not much there
Reason to see it: None. I've had this movie for almost a month now and still find it too boring to see the rest of it
Good things: Hmm.......?
Bad things: Long, boring and confusing
Sean Bean’s character dies: Not available yet.

Caravaggio (1986) .... Ranuccio
Genre: Artistic work
Story: A painter's passion, life and death.
Sean Bean: Really hot in this haunting role.
SB’s character: He works for the painter and ends up falling in love with him. They share a bloody kiss but that's all.
Reason to see it: To see a young SB with little clothes, the kiss mentioned above (which is really well done) and if you like artistic movies this one is very real done.
Good things: SB...little clothes...bloody kiss. It's a must see!
Bad things: Well, if you don't like alternative movies then this isn't your cup of tea.
Sean Bean’s character dies: Yes. He's stabbed to death.

"Storyteller, The" (1987) playing "The Prince" in episode: "True Bride, The"
Genre: Fantasy
Story: The handsome prince falls under an evil spell and only his one true bride can break it.
Sean Bean: Wonderful in this role. Really cute.
SB’s character: A handsome and loving gardener who marries a princess and thus becomes a prince.
Reason to see it: It's a cute little epsiode
Good things: Sean when he wakes up from his spell, Sean when we first see him working in the garden.
Bad things: None really. It's a sweet and short children's fairytale.
Sean Bean’s character dies: No.
